Dig Deeper

Bev Dulson's review Feb 26, 13
Read from February 24 to 26, 2013

This review is from: Dig Deeper (Kindle Edition)
This is a great read, really easy to get into and once I was into it, I couldn't put it down.It features really well rounded characters who are easy to identify with and care about what happens to them.

The main character, Emily appears to have it all, great job, fab friends, hot boyfriend...just what we'd all like. Except, said boyfriend is maybe not the Mr Perfect she thinks he is. We get insights to how Emily is feeling through her sessions with her counsellor. Loren provides humour in what is a difficult subject to brooch, along with characters such as her best friend Gwyneth - who has some cracking one liners and I especially liked Danny, the gym instructor who provided lighter moments. The story kept me guessing to the end as I was swept along with Emily's 'plan'.

Interweaved into the plot as some 'flashback' moments which help the reader to understand Emily more and see how she thinks.
Don't want to give too much of the plot away but I was very satisfied with the ending and it was good to see Emily get her 'ooh' back.
Hope there is more to come from this author, this is a fantastic debut

Virtual Reality

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read 7 Jun 2013

Read this book in almost one sitting. Valerie Barrett is in emotional turmoil after being dumped by her boyfriend Dorel. She finds comfort in the online game Virtual Reality, where she reinvents herself as Vivacious Veronica. As we go through the different stages of her heartbreak, you can't help but will Val to a happy ending, whilst also hoping certain characters (who shall remain nameless - no spoilers) will get their come uppance.

This was a great read, funny, with situations everyone can relate to (I especially liked the bootcamp scenes). And anyone who has ever been through a break up will totally get Val's need to reinvent herself. However, the use of doing it via an online game makes this book refreshingly different from any other heart break story.

Right until this last page this book gave you little surprises, Sonia Loren has a great talent for pulling you into the story, the easy and witty dialogue between the characters makes the story flow effotlessly - can't wait for the next book

I loved reading about Valerie and her life. This book has a smooth flow and it is such a compelling read. I could not put it down and finished it in just a few days. Valerie's character is someone you can relate to and easy to like. I really enjoyed the plot and it was never predictable. By the time I reached the end I was not ready to let go!!! I also liked the portrayal of bipolar disorder, a really good approach by the writer and also she gave us an intelligent look at the world of virtual reality.
I would thoroughly recommend this book, and I can't wait for new books from this writer!

Dig Deeper

5.0 out of 5 stars Dig Deeper, 15 Feb 2013

I thoroughly enjoyed Dig Depper. I was hooked from the start, although I must admit, it took me a little while to warm to the protagonist, but I am pleased to say that my view did begin to change of her as the book progressed and we began to find out more about her and some of the reasons as to why she is the way she is and by he end, i actually liked her!

The themes of the book were both relatable and believable, which is why I think it flowed so well and was easy to read. Everyone knows or knows of an `Emily' and every girl wants and needs a friend like `Gwyneth' and we can all of course relate to being in a relationship that is no good for us, that we stay in far longer than we should...

The book also gives a very positive view about `therapy' and cements the old adage that ` it's good to talk' - you never know what you might find out about yourself!

An enjoyable read with themes that are easy to relate to and empathise with. Follows the conventions of `chick Lit' but with the added dimension of Emily's emotional journey to reconcile her past through her therapy.

I particularly liked the way the author used these therapy sessions to add backstory in snippets without clumping them all together at the beginning of the story, or in exasperating drawn out prose as some authors do. Instead they took the form of well placed `scenes; that worked in parallel with the development of the story line in such a way that we slowly get to understand, through these past events, some of the reasoning behind Emily's (often selfish and reprehensible) behaviour. - It is through this and her own realisation of this, that we begin to forgive her and move over to her side.

The secondary characters are also distinctive and well developed and I fell in love with Gwyn almost instantly!

It is slow to start and occasionally clichéd (but bear with that) but once into the swing it is a real page turner with enough suspense to keep you guessing and a satisfying conclusion. Overall, a good read with well handled themes that were emotive but light. A promising debut and I look forward to reading more from this author.

I read Dig Deeper on holiday and it was the ideal choice to occupy me on the flight and beach, so I finished it in just two days! The characters were believable and I really felt for Emily in her relationship dilemmas. I liked how the story tied into her therapy too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book! 25 Mar 2013

I really loved this book from beginning to end. The narrative flows quite easily and I was hooked from the very first chapters. I finished the second half in two days and, without giving anything away, I was very satisfied with the ending. I so wish we could have a follow up already as I felt sad to leave the characters behind. I really connected with them, which in my opinion is a testament to the writer's ability to make the protagonist and the secondary characters honest, real, flawed and very easy to relate to. They could be your friends. Amazing debut I think and I would really love to check out any new books from this writer.
